Materials for Drawing I (Art 104) DeMott Spring 2025

Students will create a binder of notes and drawings.

Required Materials

  • 50 top-loading clear plastic page sleeves
  • A one-inch three-ring binder…must have a clear face pocket and clear spine pocket
  • Some sort of art box (anything…could be an old tackle box, a shoebox, a backpack)
  • Permanent black (Sharpie) markers: large, fine and ultra-fine tip
  • Graphite drawing pencils: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • 3 - 5 large sticks of soft compressed charcoal
  • 1 white plastic eraser / 1 gray kneaded eraser / 1 brown gum eraser
  • A small set of soft pastels (8 - 12 is enough)
  • One ebony pencil
  • 2 conte crayons (sanguine or bistre)
  • Large utility knife (Olfa brand)
  • Hand-held pencil sharpener with cannister
  • Small sandpaper pad
  • Scissors
  • Large permanent glue stick
  • 24” aluminum ruler
  • Medium-quality 1/2” flat synthetic brush
  • Large drawing pad 18 x 24” with at least 20 sheets of 80 or 100 pound white paper
  • One 20 x 30” sheet of heavyweight white hot press illustration board
  • One 15 x 20” sheet of lightweight white hot press illustration board
  • Some sort of “portfolio” (could be a large plastic bag)
  • Additional (totally optional) materials
  • Smaller sketchbook
  • Colored markers
  • Colored pencils
  • Micron pens
  • India Ink
  • Scotch tape
  • X-acto knife
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Drafting triangles
  • Circle template or compass
  • Drafting tape or artist’s tape
  • Tortillons or blending stumps
  • Acrylic paint and brushes
  • Spray paint (can’t be used anywhere on campus)
  • Spray fixative (can’t be used anywhere on campus)
